I try to learn a greeting and thank you in each language. Once I greet someone, they immediately switch to English. As an American I’m pretty jealous that most Swiss are multi lingual and pretty fluently. The way our schools and culture treat learning a second language is trash. I’m trying to teach myself Spanish as an adult and it’s so freaking hard. It’s not hard when you’re a kid Why couldn’t they just make a legitimate effort to teach us and expect us to be able to proficient in having conversations?! Ugh. Switzerland was beautiful! I’m trying to figure out how to go back there already because it was just so awe-inspiring. If you take a 4 hour train ride from Switzerland, you could be in Italy, Germany, France. Etc. So there are more opportunities to experience and hear other languages. I can drive nearly 5 hours and still be in my same state. And since English is the predominant language of the US, it’s hard to get in practice with other languages. For sure, but I think it’s also a cultural thing. we expect Spanish speaking people to learn English but we don’t wanna meet in the middle and learn some Spanish. There’s soooooo many Spanish-speakers in the US that don’t know English and I wish I could communicate with them better, and that’s why I’m learning. I’m a nurse and I get Spanish speaking pt all the time. It’s such a log jam in my day to deal with, to get a translation service on the phone, or to hunt down a family member that’s bilingual. I just want to be able to do it myself. Something that should take 5 minutes now takes an hour sometimes. But I’m always gonna go full ass with it because they deserve to understand what’s going on just as well as an English speaking pt would.
