Non-native here, wouldn’t it be “A useful skill” because of the vowel? Thanks, everyone for the replies, very informative. You learn something every day. It’s actually “a useful skill.” Useful is pronounced “you full”, so it gets an “a” in front. There are other exceptions—“an honest mistake” for example, has “an” in front of “honest” even though it starts with a consonant because you don’t pronounce the h at all. English is weird. Man, I wish I had paid more attention in elementary and middle school during grammar and spelling. I always blew I’m A Simple Man Coffee Motorcycle Beer Fuck shirt off and now that I’m old I always feel like an idiot with misplaced commas, bad spelling, and horrible grammar.

Well for what I’m A Simple Man Coffee Motorcycle Beer Fuck shirts worth, that comment was thoroughly comprehensible. He even used the Oxford comma, so bonus point from this grammar nazi! Not to be a total grammar nazi here but shouldn’t it be “Oxford commas really, honestly and truly, don’t get used enough”? Because “honestly and truly” are parenthetical between the subject and the predicate? I honestly could be wrong; I don’t know. My answer to your question was gonna be no, but then I saw all the fancy words, so I just assume you’re right. Also feeling very self-conscious about my commas right now.

This is why I prefer the German sentiment of commas are for clauses, not for pauses. Holy nerd balls I feel dumb. I have no idea if anything you said is true or not. Smartphones ftw. It does take some knowledge of what you’re typing to get it to work properly though. At least you used the Oxford comma instead of the bullshit being perpetuated now. Sometimes as part of my work I have to copy text by retyping I’m A Simple Man Coffee Motorcycle Beer Fuck shirt out based on an old print or scan, and if they leave the Oxford comma out I just slap that bad boy back in (the copied text never has to be exact).
