Seems like the I’m Not Sensitive I Just Chop Too many Onions T-Shirt so you should to go to store and get this general consensus is that this would be a totally disposable MCU filler movie but Raimi’s direction is notably good… that’s about what I expected but less than I had hoped for. I just watched EEAAO yesterday and it definitely secures a place in one of my top movies of all time. I will probably plan for a second rewatch instead of watching Dr. Strange this week. Multiverse of Madness isn’t wildly unconventional in its story choices, but the fun it has exploring the possibilities of this narrative makes it a treat. That’s not mental gymnastics. They’re just being more elaborate. Mental gymnastics and thinking are not always the same. Its a safe review, it tells that the story ia flawed, but still enjoyable if you shut down the brain and watch for visuals. I don’t think it’ll be a mess, I think it’s just saying it’ll be yet another largely generic MCU movie that offers multiverse excitement to hide the fact. Sucks Everything Everywhere All At Once came out just before this because it’s just gunna show what you COULD do with the Marvel IP if they weren’t so busy plugging other IPs. We will see, but my general annoyance with Marvel is that they have this set of archetypes but can’t be bothered to actually put them in complex situations with bigger ideas. Especially in this hyper-reference phase of Marvel that’s getting tired as much as their old formula almost killed the franchise.

Like, are they gunna actually use these scenes and cameos to build out the I’m Not Sensitive I Just Chop Too many Onions T-Shirt so you should to go to store and get this theme? Or are we just gunna see Zombie Scarlet Witch because Disney needs as much “hey did you see that Disney+ show What If we released before this?” moments in it and more reasons to make Zombie Scarlet Witch…and honestly, you could HAVE Zombie Scarlet Witch if you spent the time to give her a meaning in the plot beyond “nuisance that starts a fight scene because multiverse”. If you use references, intertextuality, and spectacle in smart ways it can work out to build out the movie to be just as strong as a movie without that stuff…they just don’t seem to care in favor of the structure of a big third act fight sequence that’s 30 minutes long about very little and a bunch of references to nostalgia that just stop the momentum so that their geek audience can feel accomplished in knowing that reference.
