In my experience Bartenders really hate it when people steal glasses. I also find that the people who steal the most glasses are the same Bartenders. If it’s like the US, any mug you steal at a bar/pub was given to the business from the distributor who got it heavily discounted or for free. Oh and they are given in either 12 packs or 24 packs so there is a lot. So its very, very close to a victimless crime. The cost mostly incurred by the big, big guy the top. If it’s a smaller brewery/cidery, then the distributor paid for it so it’s still not stealing from the little guy. Just something given to them by a bigger guy.

And trying not to take the same glass twice Around 20 years ago, I was out drinking at a place where my good friend was bartending, and was chatting to him as I was about to go home. He poured me a large glass of coke in a half-litre Coca Cola glass ‘to go’, which I drank on the way home (walking around 3 km). I still have (and use) that glass, although I haven’t talked to that friend in maybe 10 years. It’s not taken seriously though. Most pubs will have generic pints. Not so in Belgium – only the trashiest would pour a beer in the wrong glass.
