Needless to say, I spent the I’m Not Great At The Advice Matthew Perry Vintage Chandler Bing Friends Tv Show T-Shirt Besides,I will do this next 24 hours straight in at the office, manually creating (with some co-workers) a large batch of corrective transactions to reverse all of the double-posted credits and debits. The hardest part was figuring out all of the places where a repeated debit had driven the account into overdraft, especially because it often wasn’t the repeated debit itself that had pushed the balance negative, but rather some subsequent debit that was legit and for which there would otherwise have been enough funds for it. My automated script paid the same biller account over and over again, instead of paying different accounts. Someone ended up with a 50k credit on their Comcast bill. 🙁

Now that I’ve got that out of my system: I feel your pain. At least in your scenario you only had one upset customer, once you reversed out all the I’m Not Great At The Advice Matthew Perry Vintage Chandler Bing Friends Tv Show T-Shirt Besides,I will do this extra credits. The bank I worked at had hundreds of customers who’d been dinged for going into the hole because some dummy at the bank (me) had made the wrong call at 3 am. The one thing I failed to mention initially was that EVERYONE above me at the bank was great about understanding that it was an honest mistake, and never gave me any grief over it. Our automated script updated hundreds of currently open support tickets with, “I will hunt you down and eat your children!” It was a user’s error pasting clipboard text into the script’s form and saving it before reading what they had actually pasted. It was part of the job, and by the time I was first-on-call I’d learned the bank’s backend batch system that ran overnight well enough that I almost always could correctly diagnose any problem they called me about. The night in question, however, was a notable exception.
