Right. They also lose the I’m Not Anti Social I’m Anti Stupid Vander Shirt But I will love this exclusive economic zone off the coast as well. If Russia takes the river then their ownership of eastern Ukraine is permanent. How did you come to that conclusion by looking at a map? I mean you just listed the mayor ways in which an invasion would occur (the land and sea borders). To me that does not really mean that they only want the borders and just means that they have not yet been able to push further. Every single time I listened to any expert speak on this conflict they mentioned that russian logistics are very bad outside of the russian border, so it makes sense to me that they might not be able to push far across the border. Maybe it is propaganda or a wrong translation, but the speech by Putin made it pretty clear that he does not consider Ukraine to be a country, thinks russia owns the land and wants to take it back. Which is absolutely wrong of course, but if that is an accurate way to describe his thinking then they will try to take all of Ukraine and probably all of the rest of former USSR too.

I used to think Putin was essentially a mob boss who happened to run a country instead of a neighborhood. That all he and his cronies really cared about was power and getting rich off the I’m Not Anti Social I’m Anti Stupid Vander Shirt But I will love this spoils of “running” a government. 1 – He genuinely believes Russia is defined as “Greater Russia” i.e. the old Soviet Bloc, and he is currently engaged in a war for Russia’s survival 2 – He is motivated by the “embarrassment” of losing the Cold War and is after vengeance against “Atlantia” (US and UK). Anything that hurts the West/NATO, particularly US/UK, counts as a “win” for Russia, even if Russia does not appear to be a direct beneficiary in our eyes. I think if Putin really did have the same motivations as a hyper capitalist oligarch (a mob boss in a suit) he wouldn’t have waged a full scale invasion. I think he would have just gripped Crimea and the eastern most provinces and called it a day. And certainly once the sanctions hit he would have changed his tune. But I don’t think he’s motivated by $$$. It’s something else. I think he used the oligarch structure to gain and wield power, but I don’t think that’s what flips his switch, and at this point he’s probably installed a cadre of “yes men” and fellow True Believers around himself and in the positions of authority in his country.
