But, I teach elders who are brand new to meditation how to meditate and as we move thru the beginning stages of ending the ever chattering monkey mind they are often beset by thoughts that come back time and time again to distract from the letting go. I absolutely tell them that if they feel it’s necessary, to go ahead and allow that thought to have their full attention for one session and follow it where it leads. Consistently, they have returned with some form of surprise insight about the unexpected directions their mind took them, enlightened realizations about themselves, and on occasion, issues they didn’t even know they were needing to address and the ability after that to not be plagued by that particular distraction so strongly any longer. Several have taken those thoughts out with them into journaling work, word association, and honestly, long avoided talks with family or friends.
