You should not expect everyone has to speak Hindi or english. A smile and few broken tamil words do wonder. True that, the locals give their support if you want to learn their language, even if you are an immigrant (in their mind, yep you’re an immigrant if from any other state). Only because locals don’t like to talk in Hindi. Talk in English and you’ll get broken English replies. Talk in Hindi and you’ll get a reply in Tamil. If you go ask the north Indians who have settled in Chennai for a while, I’m sure they won’t have the same opinion as someone who has done fleeting visits. Bro you can’t generalize an entire city of millions because common people in the south don’t speak Hindi or English? I’ve been living in the US for nearly two decades, and I know plenty of people in So Cal who can speak and understand only Spanish, and some of them have been in the US longer than I have ever been. One of my best friend at work is French and has a strong accent and has broken English too. Just because you are ignorant of a language doesn’t make you the worst city or bad people? Those people in Chennai have no reason to learn Hindi. They aren’t taught it. Schools, administrative affairs, legal system, government and public sector services, heck even everyday services are all in Tamil — A language which is more older and has pedigree with Sanskrit and history than Hindi. I don’t speak Hindi, though I can understand and converse briefly, and have no reason to use it as well. I’ve lived in Chennai when I was young, and it’s amazing how far that city has changed and become.

Pretty much, you can’t fill the I’m him ar15 signature shirt But I will love this glass that’s already full. They fit the saying ‘Frogs in the well’. They embrace their culture (nothing wrong with that but are averse to learn/change). Controversial but I actually think Pune is a contender. It’s maybe not the worst but definitely one of the most overrated. The traffic is the worst I’ve ever seen, pollution is bad, bus system was impossible to navigate, lots of hastily constructed slum areas, issues with blackouts and water supply in some areas. I think it’s just grown too fast for the infrastructure to keep up. Probably not a bad place if you’re rich though in one of those nice apartments that are advertised all over the highway. Well I lived in Kolkata for 5 years and would never decide to live there again. Everything in the city sucks, weather is horrible, the infrastructure has collapsed already, public transport is as uncomfortable as it can be. Good food is rare to find, can’t understand why people think they have the best Street food in India. I would skip most of North India. Almost always someone (educated, well todo , students, professionals) stole some shit from apartment/ hostel rooms if not fully locked up. This happened to me in Jaipur, Lucknow, Kanpur & Delhi.
