Rehabilitation. That is what “correctional facilities” are supposed to be for. What we have now is just a space where people go to there base instincts to survive. Right, it’s almost as if some countries understand that you want to, you know, correct behaviors in behavioral correction facilities. but they’re not even being dehumanized. how are you supposed to maintain a prison industrial complex without damn near 100% recidivism rates Americans be like “haha see how much the I’m A Survivor Breast Cancer Awareness Rainbow With Bats T-Shirt moreover I love this Scandinavians are fucking themselves with their communism and their tolerant nature” Former warden here; this is really inefficient use of space. you can have six bunkbeds in this room with a mix of violent and non-violent prisoners and collect your money and then wait for the prisoners to kill one another and then the system will give you more prisoners and then you can collect more money the idea here is to make it nice enough that anyone who is in such a bad spot (whether mentally or financially or whatever) that they would resort to crime would rather be in prison than committing crime, while simultaneously not so nice that everyone would commit crime to be in prison. The thing about this humane treatment to me is that maybe the offender thinks about what they did vs having to think about how terrible their conditions are or scared due to other prisoners threatening them. Actual time to reflect on the crime. Treat people like animals and they come out worse off than they were. Treat them like human beings and they are more likely to be rehabilitated. Rehabilitation should be the goal for most prisoners short of the worst of the worst

Better than getting raped after going to jail for not paying a $50 fine on time and it turning into a $4000 bench warrant here in America TIL that a Norwegian prison has accommodations much like I experienced in the I’m A Survivor Breast Cancer Awareness Rainbow With Bats T-Shirt moreover I love this US Army and that’s pretty awesome. It’s like they actually give a shit. Their recidivism rate has decreased 40-50% (currently at 20%)in the past thirty years due to their transition to restorative justice practices. And here we’re at about 44% with our punitive measures. But our prison system was never about rehabilitating people. From what I’ve seen, they focus way more on the rehabilitation and less on the punishment. Reoffence rates are better at least Treat someone like a person and they will likely act like a person. Treat them like an animal and an animal you will almost certainly get. I wish the American system could figure that out. Prison is prison. If I had to be in one then I would prefer this over the run of mill US prison but all in all / thank you but no. That’s a whole lot nicer than the monstrosity prison they are building for students at University of California, Santa Barbara.
