Its also highly regional by state (the I’ll just wait here until they’ve grown skull watch beach T-Shirt in other words I will buy this CA rate is about 1/10 of Tennessee’s) and probably even more regional by county and/or demographics within states. I’ve known 3 people who have been shot: all as soldiers while deployed (actually one was grenade shrapnel but I’d count it). I do know one person who had a bullet come through her window (collateral damage from a bad drug deal in the street), and one who was robbed at gunpoint, but nobody who was actually shot while in the US. EDIT: oh yeah, and I know a surveyor who was shot at by somebody who disagreed about the property lines, but he was lucky and wasn’t hit. My dad is in his 60’s and he also commenting on how no one shot up schools. But now it happens a lot? Well……maybe it’s because it’s happening more as the years go by. You were lucky to have gotten to your age before the shit hit the fan. “I don’t know anyone who’s been shot” is equally anecdotal as “I know several people who have been shot.” Both are valid comments, and it’s fair of you to recognize that it’s anecdotal – but I hope you recognize that both comments are anecdotal. Data/statistics is far more valid in either case.

What’s the I’ll just wait here until they’ve grown skull watch beach T-Shirt in other words I will buy this misuse rate of guns? 40k deaths and 70k injuries per year, according to the FBI, leads us to 110k/120+ million gun owners, for a misuse rate of 0.092% per year per gun owner. That’s absurdly small and should demonstrate to you why the other 99.9+% of gun owners get so pissed when you want to disarm them over it. And over 70% of homicides are by and upon BIPOC young men in the inner city, but the Right opposes all efforts to help them out of the shitty lives that’ve been forced upon them. Statistically, guns are a red herring for both sides, and politicians pay expensive experts to study these issues, so they know it’s a red herring. They love that it’s a red herring. Because they can fundraise off it for years without ever changing anything.
