College is a necessity now not a luxury. It’s like what graduating from high school used to be. Only outlier is if you learn a trade then college isn’t a must A lot of different perspectives in this thread, but I don’t see anyone mentioning how COVID negatively impacted businesses and forced them to think more strategically or how that market is still backlogged with new grads since 2020. I graduated college about a year ago and did everything right – graduated top of my class, worked a 2 year internship, won a capstone contest and several awards, was the IEP I Encourage Progress Special Education Autism Teacher T-Shirt Besides,I will do this president in the club of my major, and earned a nice portfolio of 14 certifications from IT to marketing. The consulting company that I received a job offer for rescinded it because of the job market – they went into a hiring freeze. Since companies were already deploying applications for 23-24 grads, I was toast. Now, I’m a college grad who did everything right, but can’t find work. It hurts to see people who I went to school with skip through college, sacrifice nothing, and be gainfully employed because they were able to get an internship with a company when COVID restriction were lifted.

Graduates during economic turmoil are generally disadvantaged. Statistics even show this that those who graduated during recessions are likely to be risk averse once they land a position due to how difficult it is for them to land a job. It’s not the same situation as you but similar. I just graduated with a degree in Computer Engineering, and I did everything right. I had a job lined up with the company I interned at last summer, and they delayed all hiring until last week. I heard from my old boss that the budget is tight, and they probably won’t even consider hiring for the position until next year… I have my first interview tomorrow after hundreds of applications. It’s with the same company I interned with but a pretty different position (fortunately in the same department), and tbh the pay isn’t super great. Just so I can have something until I find better work or the post the position I was hoping for. I’m not very qualified for this position, but my boss put in a good word for me, and the team member hiring for this position likes me. This is my stroke of luck, and I really hope it pays off.
