Lastly and maybe the biggest contribution he made was his push to develop digital cine cameras. As you can see Lucas was a big special effects guy and to do SFX in those days you had to shoot in film, scan to digital, apply the FX, then re print to film. Well in his head he thought it would be so much easier to just shoot everything digitally. So when he was shooting the Star Wars prequels, he was partnered with Sony to develop early digital cine cameras and Star Wars Episode 2 was the first big Hollywood blockbuster to be shot entirely digitally. These days 90% of films are shot with digital cameras and they can trace that directly to George Lucas.
