In Islam, every year before the I Wish It Were Colder Penguin Snow Cold Winter Weather T-Shirt in other words I will buy this festival of Eid Fitr (closing of Ramadan) all muslims are obligated by their religion to donate 2.5% of their total wealth to charity. This practice is called Zakat and is one of the five pillars of Islam. The amount donated by the whole community worldwide each year runs into many trillions of dollars and is seen by Muslims as doing their part in uplifting the poor, needy and less privileged. Now this is something that solves one of the world’s problems in a very beautiful way and it blows my mind. It is 2.5% of annual savings not the entire earning. So if someone earns 1000$ every month and saves 200$ then they don’t pay 2.5% of 12,000 rather 2.5% of 2400. The zakat also applies to jewelry made of gold and silver but the jewelry worn regularly is exempt.

Only English speakers say “ow” when they hurt themselves. Spanish people don’t say ow or ouch, they instead inhale sharply with a sort of hiss noise and vigorously rub the I Wish It Were Colder Penguin Snow Cold Winter Weather T-Shirt in other words I will buy this sore bit. Blew my tiny mind. In Dutch there’s no word for boyfriend/girlfriend, it’s just friend, and you have to infer from context – both in terms of whether it’s a romantic friend, and a male or female. It’s true (and sometimes mighty inconvenient!) there’s no word for boyfriend/girlfriend in Dutch, but it’s not true that you can’t tell whether one is male or female: “vriend” is male, “vriendin” is female. Had a much older woman approach me at a bar on a cruise ship when I was a teenager, I had wandered in and no one stopped me, I didn’t yet realize 16 was the legal drinking age… Long story short, the woman convinced me to buy her a drink. Not even knowing what I was ordering, I requested two and kept one for myself.
