They aren’t telling you their full story. We don’t kick our kids out at 18. I don’t know anyone who has. Usually it’s that they are making their own choice to move out because they don’t like the I will drink here or there will drink Dutch Bros shirt moreover I will buy this rules at home or want more freedom than parents provide – like the ability to have a girlfriend come over stay the night with wild sex all over the kitchen table, do drugs, come home drunk, things you can’t really do when you have little brothers and sisters and your mom and dad right there. Often most American kids get a soft launch which is they leave and then come back home again and then leave longer and then come back and leave longer and eventually they’re launched. This can take up to roughly age 30 although some people do it by 25 if they have found a good paying job. In my daughter’s case when she was 19 after a year away at uni doing whatever she wanted she moved home from the summer and learned it wasn’t ok for her to stay out all night even with her argument that she was over 18. When she was given some rules and boundaries, she chose to move out since she had a relatively good paying job. That was her choice. Then she quickly figured it out how expensive it is to live on your own without nearly as nice a situation as you have it at home. I considered that a lesson in reality good for her to learn. So she asked to move back and of course she’s welcome and she’s much nicer and more cooperative about it. Then she’ll move out again for this winter for a job out of state. That’s all her choice. She’s welcome to stay here as long as she wants. But there are rules for her own well-being as well as for peace.

But when she wants to start redecorating the I will drink here or there will drink Dutch Bros shirt moreover I will buy this whole house and having freedom that living with parents doesn’t allow, she will choose to move out. When she eventually buys her own home in the future after university that’s when she probably won’t move back again, but even then sometimes there is a divorce or hard times – we never know. My parents were always there for me and we will always be there for her for whatever she needs. An exception for this might be in divorce situation where both parents have remarried with new families and their focus is on younger children but I honestly don’t know of anyone personally in a situation like that. My parents didn’t do that to me. I moved out of my own accord when I was seventeen because it just seemed like the thing to do. It was tough and I eventually moved back for a couple of years to recover from that and to get into a better position financially. I think a lot of it is that our parents (I’m Gen X and my parents are boomers); our parents expect us to learn to stand alone earlier than they do in other countries or cultures.
