Brian’s mother claims she gave him the I Wear Blue For Diabetes Awareness Rainbow Shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this letter before the trip but I don’t believe that for a second. I think she knew what he’d done and was 100% on board with helping him escape justice. As a parent, I can’t imagine being on the horns of that dilemma at all. I can empathize with wanting to just make it all stop and go away, but I think you’d need to wash your hands of it- nothing you can do erases the horrific they did and need to answer for. I wouldn’t want them dead, in jail or running free. What I would want is to dig a deep hole in my backyard, crawl into it and die. I think what most parents would probably do is go into “support” mode. You know what he did, you know he’s going to jail for it, but he’s still your son and you still love him. So, you stand by him, show up at court to be his “moral support”, all the while not condoning for a second the crime he committed. I’ve seen cases where the accused’s parents end up if not friends, at least supportive of the victims family, who recognise that they are also losing a loved one (to jail or execution) even though it’s that same loved ones fault.

I went to high school with a guy who, in a drug fueled craze, bit off his girlfriends nose before killing her. His parents disowned him immediately, which I found understandable All of those things you’d have to do because they’re right- stand by him, show at court and watch that whole damn thing, face the I Wear Blue For Diabetes Awareness Rainbow Shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this family that they brought such grief to…oof. It sounds like being tossed into boiling water. Yes- all of that is what you’d have to pull your shit together enough to do, but I think dying in a hole would be preferable. Just as a thought exercise, I’ve wondered how I would react if my brother, or god forbid my husband, was accused of something terrible. I want to think I’d testify honestly as to whatever I might know about both the facts and their character. I also think that running through these thought exercises is a very good way to prepare your brain for an extreme situation like this. Like a fire drill, if that makes sense. If this were to happen, how should I react? Can I plan my actions? That’s some serious self-flagellation there! I’ll take thought exercises like “found a scratch off on the sidewalk and won $10 mil! What’s the first thing I do?” But I understand that approach to readiness in case the worst thing happens. Like being a prepper, only devoted to a mental/emotional doomsday.
