Ancient Greek history is kind of interesting, because there’s so much mythology and legend sprinkled through it that you know are fictional, but a lot of the I Was Playing Pickleball Before It Was Cool Vintage T-Shirt in contrast I will get this events do have a nugget of truth too. But I think a lot of people assume more of it is based in reality than it actually is. I think this is also a pretty notable “lie”. The guy didn’t have a BA in archeology and basically bullshitted his way into being able to “excavate” the site. And for anyone here reading who doesn’t know, “excavating” meant leveling ancient structures to the ground, creating an artifact salad. Alot of cool shit was found, but so much was destroyed. If properly certified people dug up the site, we could have learned so much more. Heck, one of the points made against the existence of the Trojan war, is the fact that the compiled artifacts from Troy that were used as “proof” of the war, probably weren’t even from same centuries, due to the nature of the excavation. So many ancient cities were leveled by earthquakes too. Like the ancient city of Corinth was destroyed twice by earthquakes and twice more by conquest

Apart from that the I Was Playing Pickleball Before It Was Cool Vintage T-Shirt in contrast I will get this archeologist that found Troy (Heinrich Schliemann) was known for using dynamite in the excavation. Personally, I dislike the tendency of discounting older historical facts because of a lack of modern evidence. Remember, for this reason the consensus was that Tory did not exist, until they then found it exactly where the Iliad described it being. Still boggles my mind that nobody thought Troy was a real place until someone thought of just reading the Iliad and going where Homer said it was. I used to believe this as well as that’s what I was taught in school but came across this answer in r/AskHistorians a while back which goes into what really happened. Wasnt the fact the city was found with 10 unique layers of development implying it had been destroyed and rebuilt throughout history? And one such layer did corrolate to the aproximate era the trojan war wouldve happened? When the allies tricked Germany into thinking D-Day was happening at other locations which weakened thier defenses at the primary landing points Is mincemeat the one where they dressed up a corpse as a military officer and planted fake plans on it and set it floating towards Italy or something? And Ian Fleming actually went to school with Blofeld. Or to be more precise, cricket commentator Henry Blofeld. Possibly England’s poshest sounding man.
