Your SO is the I Teach What’s Your Superpower Teacher Ghost Halloween T-Shirt and by the same token and person who should most have your back. I can’t, under any circumstances, imagine a scenario where my husband would even jokingly utter that phrase. Good god not only is he saying he’s anti choice but he explicitly says he’d kill you if you got an abortion? After you have been together 13 years? Go go go go go. It’s apparent that many men’s views on abortion are based on hypotheticals and simplistic logic that is completely out of touch with reality. Few men know anything about pregnancy and its inherent risks, or about miscarriage and it’s complicated entanglement with abortion, or have really thought about what it actually means when someone is forced to carry a pregnancy to term. It’s not a “consequence” for having sex, as if having sex with someone is a crime. It’s not a “lesson.” It’s a profound event with a tsunami of ripple effects on many, many lives and many possible outcomes—and not all good ones. 13 years is a long time. I’m hoping this man is just ignorant and open to education. But I think it’s an issue he needs to learn about to understand how hurtful this stance is. Does he know that illegal abortions lead to women dying, either by suicide or botched attempts or due to medical red tape? Or that illegal abortions mean women could face charges for miscarriage, which is how a large fraction of pregnancies end? Does he realize those “exceptions” are meaningless if all abortions are criminalized?

Here’s the I Teach What’s Your Superpower Teacher Ghost Halloween T-Shirt and by the same token and thing—if he can’t handle this conversation and come out the other side ready to accept you and hear about your abortions, I think that’s grounds for going your own ways. You can agree to disagree on a lot of things, but you have to agree on each other’s humanity. Time for a graceful exit from that relationship. Better that you found this out this way, before anything more traumatic could occur. Your partner must respect your bodily autonomy. You’ve been together for 13 years and this is the first you’re learning that’s not pro-choice? How is that even possible? You need to tell him about your abortions and gadgets his reaction. If he thinks you’re a murderer you need to leave him.
