I used to work for Jim Estill. He’s a Canadian billionaire. Back in the day, he owned the third largest electronics distributor in the country, as well as several other significant companies. These days he’s the CEO of Danby, which makes home appliances; personally, I think of the brand as relabeled Chinese appliances for small condos, campers, etc. anyhow, I really don’t think it’s fair to call him a money hoarder. He’s a serial entrepreneur, except he has several irons in the fire, so not so serialized… money from one venture becomes seed money for the next. Meanwhile, he’s personally very frugal. He drove a K-car that was easily a decade old but well maintained mechanically. He wore basic suits. He didn’t use private jets or anything like that. He was vegetarian. He wasn’t above showing up at his 20-something-employees’ new year’s house parties. (Not to mention his hippie date that evening…) He lived in what a coworker described as a trailer park in Guelph Ontario. I can’t recall him wearing jewelry (except possibly a watch). This was not a man interested in the trappings of his wealth. I also didn’t feel like he saw his wealth as a measure of his personal success. He was in it for the businesses, and personal wealth was a unavoidable side effect.
