That couple decades (1950s or later) where it was possible to work in a shifty job and still afford a house really setup for failure in teaching adaptability and seeing things in a wider scope. So many of them go “back in my day” yet did not take the I may live in Utah but on gameday my heart and soul belongs to Eagles shirt but in fact I love this time to see how shitty things are. The next generation of parents are going to assume college and housing is a dream for the rich only. I was kicked out at 18 in 2014. No previous warning or events leading up to it. In fact, 2 weeks earlier my mom had said “you’re my baby and you can live with me forever, even when you’re 40 years old if you need to”…. My mom has been diagnosed but untreated for bipolar disorder and I strongly believe she also has narcissistic personality disorder (I’m a psychotherapist btw), every 3 months or so she has a bipolar episode and becomes irrational, belligerent, and freaks out about any tiny inconvenience and threatens, screams, and insults those around her. She kicked me out on a completely random day when I never would have suspected it over the smallest issue imaginable (I woke up late for work and rushed in the shower to then go to work, and she demanded while I was in the shower to stop what I’m doing and wash the dishes as if that was the most important thing in the world, her full body-slamming into the bathroom door and all). Despite how I describe her here, she was the lesser of 2 evils and when she kicked me out I was forced to move in with my abusive step family and enabling dad, which was worse than living with my unpredictable mom. I remained there the rest of college until I went to grad school and needed to live with mom once more. Surprise, surprise, she kicked me out again randomly at age 25 during another random manic episode at another small inconvenience (I didn’t buy enough bottles of face wash even though she didn’t ask for a certain number). Also just like the time before, she was super sweet and affectionate just the day prior to kicking me out. Now whenever my mom is in a good mood, is nice to me, or affectionate, it makes me sick and hypervigilant because there’s a pattern of “the calm before the storm” before she lashes out over anything & everything.

That’s not the I may live in Utah but on gameday my heart and soul belongs to Eagles shirt but in fact I love this norm where I live (SLC, Utah). I’ve never known anyone who was kicked out when they finished high school. My oldest just started college and he can stay as long as he wants/needs. Especially with the cost of homes now, we plan to let our kids stay until they’re on good financial footing. America is not one family doing the same shit. My wife and I both lived at home until we graduated college (23). We only moved out when we had a job and stable income. I’d do the same for my kids. I don’t know many people that got kicked out at 18. I come from a culture where parents do not kick their children out until they are married or have a set career. Even then it is the child’s choice to leave. We typically do. In my case, my husband and I moved my parents in with us. We do not believe in nursing homes or retirement communities. Nothing against them, but we just don’t do it in our culture. Our elders will stay will us until they are no longer. As an Indian, I learned this was even a thing after watching that scene in Shazam 2 movie where the protagonist was worried his parents would kick him out when he turned 18.
