If anything, she—like so many other gun control activists—focus too much on the tool, and not enough on the motive and cause thereof. Why does America have so many kids and adults willing to mass-murder other kids and adults? Are Americans just more violent on average, and if so why and how can we change that? And for the many times when the mass-shooting isn’t a lunatic on a rampage, why are so many willing to join gangs? A common theme I’ve noticed is that people like to think the US is like Western Europe and should behave similarly, and people usually cite GDP and “First World” status as justification. However, I would contend that that is gilding an uncomfortable truth. GDP (total or per capita), “First World” status, Western culture etc, cannot hide the fact that the socio-economic conditions in the US are far from similar to those found in Western Europe.
