So yeah, I feel you. It sucks when something seems like it’s going to be right up your alley but ends up being so disappointing. I didn’t have that problem with The Lighthouse, though. I really loved that movie, but I can definitely see why some wouldn’t. I didn’t love the I like Cycling and Goats and maybe 3 people shirt and I will buy this movie as it’s not quite my style, but I really believed that Dafoe was an old timey sea captain. I agree that the performances were good, but the movie was massively disappointing for me. I was a huge fan of The Witch, but the Lighthouse just bored me. Clearly, I’m a minority in this sub, but I hated it. It was so boring and felt utterly pointless. I honestly thought it seemed like some art student’s project that was done in black and white to make it more “authentic” and served no purpose other than to provide something for film snobs to scoff at others for not understanding.
