funny how op never said they were christian, but so many atheists are so obsessed with christianity that they forget that anything else exists. i’m agnostic by the I know you are but what am I Pee Wee’s T-Shirt but in fact I love this way, before anyone starts telling me “WELL YOU BELIEVE IN (insert thing i do not believe in) SO I AM SUPERIOR TO YOU IDIOT” edit, since evidently i did not word this well: hey wouldn’t it be funny if the tumblr op wasn’t actually christian and everyone just assumed that they were even though (alright, i get it) statistically they probably are? Tbf, if you took 10 americans who said they were religious, you could probably guess 8 out of the 10 correctly as christian yeah, that’s probably true. i mean, no one in the thread said they were american either, but i recognize that’s also pretty likely most of them are lol Probably because Christianity is the largest religion in the world and holds massive power in western countries where most of these posters are probably from? Other religions exist, but they aren’t the ones trying to take over my government. A lot of religious people get in particular knots over atheists saying they don’t think their gods are real, but then, every religion says all the other religions’ gods aren’t real. Like, paganism and christianity and hinduism are inherently incompatible beliefs and by subscribing to one you at the very least implicitly state you think that the rest are wrong. Everyone understands that theists believe based on faith which by definition has no evidence, we just all think and sometimes politely don’t say (when the theist isn’t an asshole like you) that that’s stupid as balls and that they’re clinging to irrational belief out of fear and indoctrination

Nobody engages religious people (of the I know you are but what am I Pee Wee’s T-Shirt but in fact I love this primary religions) with actual debate because it’s pointless. You either get disillusioned after seeing the scam or you double down and convince yourself everyone else is stupid. Most strong athiests used to be religious. “See what I mean” is unhelpful and doesn’t lead to meaningful conversation. It doesn’t prove one’s superiority or your foe’s incompetence, it’s just as good an argument as “I’m right because I said so.” I could say some of the same things OOP had said, but about some religious people. I don’t have a lot of experience with people of religions other than christianity (unfortunately, as I would love to learn about their beliefs), likely because they’re satisfied leaving me alone instead of trying to convert me or make their religious views dictate an entire country’s legal system. But following up on that point, a lot of actual christians I’ve met have much shallower grasps on their religion than me, an atheist- probably because I had to actually think about the religion in order to consider leaving it behind.
