However sometimes a thing can become important by people just saying it’s important; IIRC the Mona Lisa became famous by Da Vinci telling people it was. Anything closely related to some kind of an institution, like the White House or the Hollywood Sign (being related to Hollywood as a standin for the film industry), probably also becomes a cultural icon faster. Interestingly, the Hollywood sign wasn’t really an “icon” until, in 1978, it was damaged in a windstorm. It had been neglected for decades, and was falling apart.
