This reminds me of the craziest landlord we ever had. Old, mostly retired lawyer renting out the family home and giving his weird son a “job” doing maintenance on the house. The lease had an extremely detailed list of all the things we could NOT do with fire – we weren’t even supposed to have a lighter or matches in the house. There was a provision that we COULD grill, but only if we put the grill at least 10 yards from the house and all fences… Which if you measured out the property, it was too narrow for such a spot to exist. There was a clause about not adding anything to or taking anything out of the ground; we were to leave their overgrown garden alone and had to buy above ground pots if we wanted to grow anything. We tried to mulch over the weeds in a particularly bad part of the garden, and their son came to our door and thanked us for how nice it looked… Then spent two hours meticulously raking and bagging every molecule of mulch, but not removing a single weed in the process. When it came to renewal time, they actually got our first contract out and compared my handwriting from the old contract, and REJECTED some of the pages because they thought the handwriting was too different. We finally put our foot down and told them they had to accept our signatures or kick us out. That’s when we found out the actual landlord was dealing with cancer and couldn’t review any of the documents himself, so his family had been playing pretend at knowing how to write legal documents. When he found out about the circus that had been going on, he called us and apologized profusely, and they mostly left us alone after that.

What really gets me is that these rich heirs have so much free time but instead of using that gift to learn as many things as possible they do shit like this. If I told them I’m Jewish and need to light candles on Shabbat and holidays would they be required to provide an exception for that?
