Being raised by her U.N. official father meant that she and her sister moved frequently as children (to England, Italy, Uganda, Ethiopia). It also meant that she often lived in conflict zones or places of instability, and grew up with an awareness that circumstance and fate separated her from her less fortunate neighbors. Though Owusu describes a family made up of many far-flung aunts and uncles, hers was a lonely life as well; when Owusu applied for college, she declared herself an orphan in order to qualify for financial aid. In many episodes in the book, she acts as a surrogate mother to her younger sister and younger half brother.
