Since you started interrogating those memories, have you heard similar stories from other women? In my 20s, I had a group of really close girlfriends, and most of them had stories of unpleasant or questionable or outright violent experiences as young women—abuse, rape, date rape. I would never share in those conversations. Over time I started to ask why that was, especially seeing how prevalent these stories are. It made me ask myself, Why are you not looking over there? I had done so much in trying to understand traumatic events, why was I avoiding those events? When I was starting to think about these pieces I had been writing as something I might put into the world, I read Toni Morrison’s essay “Rootedness: The Ancestor as Foundation,” in which she writes about how Black literature has an oral quality, which resonated with me. A lot of my research focused on the ancient culture of Ashanti storytelling; I wanted to participate in that oral tradition. In Morrison’s writing, there’s often a kind of chorus of community. I was thinking about my ancestors and the history of my ancestors and historical figures as that chorus. She also says in this essay that these ancestors are not just parents; they’re timeless people whose relationships to different characters are sometimes benevolent—they’re protective, they have a certain wisdom—but not always. They’re not perfect. That kind of complication is what I wanted to include in my writing. And I wanted to implicate myself as much, if not more.
