My parents and my aunt had au pairs. Only one didn’t finish her contract. She went nuts. My dad put her on a plane back to France. But from my understanding, as someone who knows many au pairs and a few people who’ve hired them, it’s not a bad arrangement. Yeah 19k a year isn’t a lot, but you have to contextualize room and board is included. I could easily, comfortably exist on 19k if I didn’t have to worry about rent, utilities, basic food, etc etc. All that and you don’t have to deal with the horrors of a normal workplace. Lots of exploitative careers out there, and lots of exploitative families that would hire one, but au pairs are not being mistreated by nature of being au pairs.
