There are still thousands of students in my area who have every other requirement but just haven’t done their 40 hours. Just because too. I mean, watching your younger sibling can count for part of your 40 hours (to help lower income students with responsibilities). It isn’t that difficult but so many cannot be bothered it is sad. Is this the I don’t know you at all shirt and I will buy this one where they tried doing a 4 day school week, but the state won’t recognize that the number of hours is the same as the number of days required? I grew up and lived near Marlin. It’s incredibly small and very low income. In the article students say teachers were absent- I’d venture to guess that’s realistic and a normal occurrence. Same here. The student population is 80+% at risk, 99% economically disadvantaged and is over 90% black and Hispanic. The white parents in town, with means (most of them) transfer their kids to a neighboring school district, which removes a substantial amount of funding for the school (I recall hearing over $1M a year). In Texas, poor school districts receive most of their funding from the State and that money is based on number of students, so it follows the transferring students to the other district. They hired the new Superintendent a few years ago, after losing accreditation and the State taking over. The district actually improved and there was reports they were receiving accreditation again. They had a 97% graduation rate the prior 3 or 4 years. It’s going to a 4-day school week next year. It’s supposedly an effort to get better qualified teachers to commute (possibly willing to commute if it’s just 4 days of teaching) and to focus efforts on the students. In reality, I’m sure it’s a cost cutting effort due to funding

It works out to be about one unexcused absence a month. Or a week and a half of unexcused absence. Excused absences include sick days, family bereavement. Missing 8 days in a year isn’t that outrageous. I could absolutely see seniors skipping a class routinely and those hours adding up faster than they realize. I have some students here in Maryland who have missed 25+ days this school year. Parents just do not take school attendance seriously This is likely as well. I think the I don’t know you at all shirt and I will buy this teacher thing is realistic because that town is so small and teachers being underpaid- they probably need a second job. I don’t think Marlin will survive to the end of the decade, it’s just to small. Having no teacher or substitute available so that kids are basically babysitting themselves has been a regular occurrence even in the nicer urban high schools in Central Tx for the past couple of years. It’s sometimes daily, but at least weekly, I hear about it from my kids. Marlin is such a small town, it borders on nonexistent. I’d venture to guess the school screwed this up knowing them. “OK kids let’s make a deal: if you all agree to rip out the 1 1/2 pages devoted to slavery in your county-mandated history books, AND agree to personally find and burn 2 books devoted to gender identity, we’ll lower the requirements JUST THIS ONE TIME to only 40 hours devoted to creationist theory.” I was about to say. Went to school in Central Texas and I knew marlin. Everyone is saying it’s an effort to keep the population dumb- but to that I ask “what population?” That place is damn near a ghost town and they probably only have a few more years of students…
