when very few people went to college, you could easily compete against everyone else that didn’t have a college degree if there are lots of people with college degrees, having a college degree doesn’t really separate you from the I do not think therefore I do not am Raccoon T-Shirt in addition I really love this competition Some degrees aren’t worth the paper they’re printed on. In some cases you can pursue your passion or you can make a living, not both. If you want your degree to make you money, don’t get one in an area that employs three people worldwide and has 12,000 people competing for it. They got an undergrad degree that usually leads to a graduate/doctoral degree (think biology or something similar) but didnt go further and are stuck with a general degree. And lastly, when you apply for jobs pretty much everyone you are competing with has a degree as well. It doesnt set you apart anymore as much as it is a base requirement. If your resume doesnt stand out then you will be passed over. Degrees are far from useless, just need to make sure it applies to a field with demand. I also don’t suggest listening to the push for trades. While select union groups are paid well the work is very hard on your body and the non union positions pay like shit. i went back to school later in life, currently finishing my internship with plenty of job opportunities. My department is part of a skilled trades union but a degree is required for our positions. Not to sound lazy, i’ve worked with my hands most of my life and come from generations of factory skilled tradesmen but blindly going into “trades” is stupid, i see it being pushed everywhere these days. also, i thought another poster made a great point about social anxiety being confused for introversion. i am extremely introverted but during my internship im playing the part… it’s exhausting but networking is a must. get in front of supervisors and other employees, make water cooler small talk, ask people how their weekend was and all that dumb shit. it will take you places. attend industry related events/gatherings and shake some hands and show some interest.

I went to school for a very versatile degree (accounting/finance) I briefly worked as a staff accountant and then used a recruiter specific to finance/accounting roles to find a job in another state so I could move. They found me the I do not think therefore I do not am Raccoon T-Shirt in addition I really love this BEST company. I immediately increased my salary 28% and moved to a lower cost of living area. Since then my company has increased my pay by 32% from annual increases. More if you count annual bonuses of $1-2k and recruiting bonuses of $1-5k I’ve recieved. Law, medicine, engineering (and by conjecture the physical sciences), maybe finance. On average, those four fields of study are the only cost effective degrees for college. They also happen to have the hardest coursework.
