Autocamp Yosemite opened in the i do it for the ho’s Christmas Funny Biker Santa USA FLAG T-Shirt and I love this summer of 2019 on a tree-filled site that spans 36 acres and holds a fleet of Airstreams along with luxury tents and cabin suites. The classic silver trailers were custom-built to feel like perfectly compact hotel rooms at the company’s Ohio headquarters before being driven out to California. Each one contains a spacious shower with Ursa Major bath products, a queen-sized bed, and basic kitchen, with room enough for a couch that converts into a second bed. When I visited in summer 2019, the property’s carefree-camp vibe was in full swing with adults playing cards in the lobby and kids wandering in from the pool. Since then, the property has implemented contactless experiences like mobile check-in and “room” service from their retail shop, but otherwise not much needed to change: Each Airstream or tent is spaced out from the others, and with strategically purchased groceries (check out nearby High Country Health Foods) as well as the property’s own pantry-shop stocked with gourmet grub like Patagonia Provisions, Autocamp is the ideal self-sustaining place to stay. Spend the evening cooking over your personal fire pit, and set out early to hike Yosemite in the morning. A couple of logistical items: Autocamp is close but not inside the National Park, so the drive to a trailhead takes about 45 minutes (the property also offers a daily shuttle). Yosemite currently has a day-use reservation system due to COVID-19, but it will resume normal operations starting November 1.
