Here in the US, most local newspapers are owned by Gannett, and most radio stations by whoever owns IHeartRadio. It’s the same spirit as 2 (or 3) false choices in network news. Consolidation and homogenization. It’s awful This is exactly what I’m talking about with my class in our government class next week- how the way we consume media affects our biases and shapes political opinion.

The problem is that these “news” stations are meant more for entertainment than for actual news consumption. In fact, legally speaking, they are considered entertainment companies and thus are not as beholden to news regulations (source: i heard it somewhere so correct me if I’m way off base… I don’t want to spread misinformation in a post decrying news misinformation). I also think these stations are popular because of confirmation bias… it helps reassure people that their views of the world are right because the guy on the screen said so. Overall, the bigger issue is not news agencies spewing crap- that’s been around since the dawn of the newspaper- but moreso that the “news” is so constant, and that in itself is a relatively new phenomenon. We haven’t quite prepared ourselves for this, and thus our media literacy has really suffered from it. I think some people love the drama and sensationalism. I have an aunt who watches Fox every day and my mom watches CNN. We are Canadian so these news sources don’t even apply to us. Yet they love eating up the drama.
