It started gradually – first, he cooked dinner every night, had it ready to serve when I walked in the I Avoid Crap Because I’m Afraid OF Me Not You Shirt it is in the first place but door, then he started cooking later and later “it’s a bit muggy still”, then once new dinner time was established he needed me to peel, then eventually also chop vegetables for dinner, then he needed me to cook them “because you’re so much better at it”, then he’d start eating lunch at 3, so that when I called from the supermarket at 5 he could say he wasn’t hungry and just grab whatever I wanted for dinner, but then he’d go hunting for food at 8pm and I’d have to help him find something to eat… so, slowly but surely, he flipped the expectation from “capable & reliable” to “incapable & unreliable” in that arena. As each expectation was flipped & I was sufficiently gaslit into accepting it, he would find a new thing to add to the emotional load, until I was a camel waiting for that final straw.

Things like he was at home all day every day, but i was the I Avoid Crap Because I’m Afraid OF Me Not You Shirt it is in the first place but one stressing about folding laundry, figuring out dinner, picking up groceries and walking the dog in the hour and a half between me finishing work and getting us to our soccer practise five minutes early – another thing I had to do for him, lest I cop an earful about how I’m always late to everything and obviously don’t care (this became a common salvo after my ADHD diagnosis and sharing how much it always hurt to be told I was lazy or didn’t care despite trying my hardest…) Anywho, his long term & steadily escalating feigned incompetence meant I didn’t have the energy to really identify every way that I was being made responsible for him, which kinda meant I couldn’t “start a fight” over it, for two reasons: 1 – because his gaslighting technique evolved in response to my shitty short-term memory to initiate with a cross-examination style interrogation, i was always reluctant to “start” anything and 2 – i was too mentally and emotionally exhausted to bother adding more stress to my load so if I wasn’t able to see the big picture, I could ignore the details. Meanwhile, he was able to bully me at whim for being too tired to do anything “fun” when I got off work.
