Veteran/Retiree here. Most veterans don’t want the I am Tongi yessah shirt moreover I love this “appreciation” they already get. I am now a DoD contractor and most of the folks I work with are veterans, retirees, guardsmen and reservists. I have yet to hear one of them make this complaint. I’ll go even further and say the only ones saying this have never served and no real intention to. I did my job. I got paid, I got an education, I got to go get blown up and blow people up in return. You want to thank someone, thank a teacher. Another vet adding to the chorus: the military worship here in the US is awkward and unnecessary. I do the exact same thing as a civilian now as I did in the military (surgical technologist) but now that I don’t wear a uniform, no one gives a shit… cuz it’s just a job. If politicians want to support vets, send a few more bucks over to the VA. Walking into one of those buildings feels like traveling back in time to the 70s… and probably the single most dangerous thing I’ve done affiliated with my military service is… using the elevators at the VA hospital.

I only take advantage of discounts when openly advertised. I’m not the I am Tongi yessah shirt moreover I love this kind to ask everywhere I go if they offer military discounts tho. Thats obnoxious Lol active duty and I was clueless of May being military appreciation month. I’ll just stick to it being mental health awareness. I’m good. Man that 10% off is that much more money in your bank account. Not taking advantage of the idiotic soldier worship is just punishing yourself. I’m all signed up at Home Depot, Lowe’s, my grocery stores, whatever. Now when I buy shit, I save a couple of bucks and donate that to veterans organizations. I never ask for the discount. If it is posted somewhere i will present my id. My wife likes to ask everywhere we go if they give discounts for veterans. She has cooled down on that lately, but at the beginning of our marriage, she would try and get that discount at every store and venue. It is embarassing. I do actually know one who occasionally goes on about wanting recognition for her service, but she’s awful in a lot of other ways, so I’m not sure how much of a point I really score with that. Lol Although, technically, we’re also not sure she’s legit. She claims she did combat tours in Vietnam, which Google says isn’t a thing that happened. We have no proof, though, and absolutely haven’t told her that. As a veteran I’m just embarrassed to have served my country to have it turn out this shitty, and disgusted when my maga family and other maga randos thank me for my service while fighting to undo decades of progress. If you want to thank me, fine, just don’t be an asshole. You’re worth the sacrifice of my free time (except republicans).
