I used to drive past Clint Lane on my way to work. When you just glance as you’re driving past, it always looks like something else. Opie Street used to be called (NSWF) Gropecunt Lane – this was from a time when street names had literal meanings in relation to what the I Am Not The Sort Of Person That Should Ever Be Put On Speakerphone T-Shirt so you should to go to store and get this core business of the area was (Baker Street, Smith street, Butcher Lane etc etc.). There used to be Butt Hole Road in Conisbrough (it’s got a wiki page). I don’t live in Essex anymore so it’s not in my area technically, but it is home to the village of Fingringhoe. There used to be an alley called “The Glory Hole” in Lincoln but the sign was either removed or stolen. Not in my area, but while waiting for the grounds at Bloodstock to open up, spent some time at the closest village, which had a ‘Bells End’ street. I’m the wrong side of 40 and still found it hilarious. That looks like Ken Dodd’s book that he gave to Kate Adie, that they brought up as an anecdote when they did the Clatterbridge cancer charity gig in the Wirral in ‘96. This was my first ever book, I loved it and fell in love with reading as a teenager, will always be grateful to Gabo for that. I’ve only read his shorter novels so far but they’re all amazing, that one especially. I’m still only at an intermediate level in Spanish so it’s a challenge to read them in their native language but it’s been more than worth the effort. 100 years is next on the list, I love his writing style more than anything so I’m sure it’ll be as fantastic as the others The characters all have the same name and that’s a specific decision made to make the sense of time non-linear but instead I just got insanely confused over who was who, what was happening etc. I don’t think that’s a me problem as I’ve never had it with another novel.
