One of them (neither will admit to it) swapped the I Am Navy Veteran I Love Freedom I Wore Dog Tags I Have DD 214 I Served My Country I Walked The Walk Shirt moreover I will buy this key rings on the vectra keys when both me and husband had vectras and I was swearing at the car about to do a basil fawlty on it with a tree branch when the sniggers started and they took the keys with my husbands key ring on it and opened my car from the window. I know. I was torn between “I’m going to strangle you both when I get my hands on you” and “I didn’t realise either of you were this bright” lol We went to a firework show, the kids had been excited for days. Hyped up on sugar and fairground rides beforehand, Sandstorm’s playing, everyone’s pumped for the amazing fireworks. The first three or 4 go off, then there’s a pause (in which something was obviously supposed to go off, but didn’t) “alright well that’s it, let’s go home” didn’t go down well. My grandad looked after my goldfish while I went on holiday. When we came, as soon as I walked into the living room he took something orange and wriggling out the bowl and promptly swallowed. I was hysterical and it took them an hour to calm me down enough to show me Goldeen was still in her bowl and what grandad had eaten was a slither of carrot.

I don’t think it was actually in the I Am Navy Veteran I Love Freedom I Wore Dog Tags I Have DD 214 I Served My Country I Walked The Walk Shirt moreover I will buy this water, but to my 7 year old eyes… that was a fish straight from the bowl haha Once on holiday, my dad said he’d give me $10 if I ate a handful of jalapeños when I was like 10 years old, had never eaten a chilli or anything spicy before. It was as they were preparing our main courses. I was in pain and didn’t taste a single bite of my meal (which was at a pretty nice restaurant). I still bring it up to this day and I now find it funny (definitely did not at the time) Sounds like she took it well. Be aware, next time might be the screaming tantrums, unforgiving looks, sobbing, claims of cruelty. End result, turning the car back home, minus the meal. Lesson learned. Little kids often don’t get jokes like that. My uncle hid my 3yo’s chips behind a menu, kid didn’t find it funny, he just didn’t understand where his chips had gone or why an adult would take his food away when it was returned to him. Kids also don’t have much of a sense of time and tend to take your word as gospel, as far as she was concerned when she woke up, you guys had left her alone in the car and had eaten a meal, she’s still quite young, that might have been a scary thought to her.
Lots of jokes and pranks are actually quite mean. I’ve taught my kids, that everyone has to be genuinely laughing for it to be a prank, if the I Am Navy Veteran I Love Freedom I Wore Dog Tags I Have DD 214 I Served My Country I Walked The Walk Shirt moreover I will buy this person being pranked doesn’t find it funny it was mean. We had discussed the prank with her before the nap about us letting her sleep in the car while we ate (obviously something that we would never do). I agree you have to particularly careful with small children as they are developing personalities etc. I got a bag of coal for Christmas when I was about 7 my parents didn’t let the joke go for about 3 days, it didn’t affect me my therapist says! I think jokes and teasing is fine if the love and compliments and nice things outnumber them vastly. It didn’t for me. I was the butt of all the family jokes and got laughed at alot, without nice things to balance it out so I’m VERY sensitive about pranks, and never teased my son at all. To me that’s not love. So maybe depends on the kid?

My dad once gave me an ice cream, asked for a bite and in that one bite he ate the I Am Navy Veteran I Love Freedom I Wore Dog Tags I Have DD 214 I Served My Country I Walked The Walk Shirt moreover I will buy this whole thing. Said thanks and walked away, I still think about it to this day and laugh. I’m sure she’ll see it as a joke eventually! When I was a kid I made a tent in the garden from a clothes horse and a blanket. I was in there happily reading my book. My dad lifted up the corner of the blanket, shoved his ass in and farted at me. 35 years later he still laughs til he cries when I remind him. Different jokes for different folks I guess? Depends how long you let it go on for (did she just look confused or was she actually upset?), as well as how she is generally. Personally, I would steer clear of that kind of prank. At the very most (if you genuinely think she won’t be upset) wake her up with “shall I go and get you your chip…? Or maybe we should go in and have lunch. Come on, wakey wakey sleepyhead, we’re at the restaurant now.” With so short a pause after the first bit that she wouldn’t have time to get upset. Under 5 is a bit young for that kind of subtlety so you could be setting yourselves up for a kid who doesn’t trust you, and who doesn’t want to have a nap when she needs one.
Just be aware that you’ll have to deal with the I Am Navy Veteran I Love Freedom I Wore Dog Tags I Have DD 214 I Served My Country I Walked The Walk Shirt moreover I will buy this character you’re building. I get great enjoyment from watching my nephew annoy my little brother in the same ways my brother used to annoy me. Sounds fine, you seem to know your kid. When I was 14 I had the refrigerator door open and was gazing around for something to eat… my dad told me to make a choice and shut the door or he would poor the pitcher of water in my trouser pocket, I must have been a little too long because I was cleaning the floor and changing my clothes soon after. I think as long as the deception is only brief you’re good! You could also ask her how she felt about it to check that she didn’t feel too hurt and if she can trust that you wouldn’t actually leave her hanging and hungry My parents legit forgot to bring me home food more than once and now I still have dreams where they forget or exclude me
Distinctly remember being in the I Am Navy Veteran I Love Freedom I Wore Dog Tags I Have DD 214 I Served My Country I Walked The Walk Shirt moreover I will buy this shop in a pram while my mum grabbed a few bits and pieces. Maybe 3/4 years old? I don’t know what age you stop being in a pram. I found mini pancakes in the shop for the first time and held them tightly as we did the rest of the groceries. Anyway I fell asleep and woke up on the way home realising the packet had slipped down my side and we hadn’t paid for them. Whole family did this big prank where they reported me to the police and then the door knocked and I hid in the kitchen while one of my uncles had a conversation with the “policeman” and came back and said I had to go to jail, go pack a bag and they’ll be back to collect me this evening. I cried for about 30 minutes before they told me it was a joke. Yours is tame.
My dad once asked me if I wanted some arsecream, I was only 10 or 11 and just assumed he ment ice cream. When I came down everyone was sat at the I Am Navy Veteran I Love Freedom I Wore Dog Tags I Have DD 214 I Served My Country I Walked The Walk Shirt moreover I will buy this table with ice cream. I was then presented with a spoon and a tub of sudocream. It’s fair to say there was much crying, followed by sulking and then when offered actual ice cream I refused it. 23 years later and it’s still an easily recalled memory. Who’s laughing by the end? Just you and the wife or all of you? If daughter wasn’t laughing, she’s not ready for pranks. My kids were desperate for Nintendo switches . Got them but also brought two light switches and wrote Nintendo on them. The look of their faces as they went from looking at the switch to each other Was brilliant My dad told me they’d have to amputate my arm whilst we were waiting in the ambulance when I cut my hand open aged 11
You’ve got to bring your kids up to have a sense of humour. As long as it’s not going too far, it’s OK to play pranks. Just expect them back. My dad was making Sunday chicken dinner. He offered me what he promised was the I Am Navy Veteran I Love Freedom I Wore Dog Tags I Have DD 214 I Served My Country I Walked The Walk Shirt moreover I will buy this best part called the parson’s nose. Me being young and trusting believed him. Turns out it’s the chickens butt.
It’s been years, since I engaged in a new outlook on this I Am Navy Veteran I Love Freedom I Wore Dog Tags I Have DD 214 I Served My Country I Walked The Walk Shirt moreover I will buy this way of life.. in that I am never disappointed in any new country where I plan to reside. I never choose a new location based on “I think I will feel better here because ” I never think a new location will make me happier, feel better, fill a void, etc.. Instead, I anticipate my next destination based on a series of factual and realistic non-emotion based actualities of said destination. Such as, I will experience a new culture, different architecture, alternate food choices, a new-to-me language, etc.. And in this destination if anything occurs that makes me feel ‘good’ or ‘better’.. cool. If not, no worries. I was never expecting anything about this location to make my life better in any aspect..
And thus.. I am never disappointed. Have had this mindset for the I Am Navy Veteran I Love Freedom I Wore Dog Tags I Have DD 214 I Served My Country I Walked The Walk Shirt moreover I will buy this past several years.. 73 countries into this life and 20+ years doing this.. disappointment has left the room entirely.. When I first starting traveling and I felt down, I searched and seeked a new destination.. for th reason of thinking it would make me feel better than how I currently felt.. And for anyone that has lived this life for awhile.. they understand this is a rookie miscalculation. It’s no different than a drug addict trying to feel better through taking more drugs/looking for a new drug. Now I search and seek out destinations simply based in factual, non-emotional personal decisions instead. I look for destinations that might be difficult, although after living there will make me a better, stronger person, etc.. I take out of the equation entirely.
When one feels down about their life and thinks the I Am Navy Veteran I Love Freedom I Wore Dog Tags I Have DD 214 I Served My Country I Walked The Walk Shirt moreover I will buy this main issue is where they are, the weather, the people, etc.. a new destination many times makes one feel worse after the honeymoon period in the new country for the most part, once they realize the new destination doesn’t change most of why they were feeling negatively for the most part. Of course if your mental state is a complete mess and you are completely down, then the country/location is irrelevant entirely. No current, past or future destination will change that. One has to do some self-discovery work first and should reconsider this lifestyle if the issue is with oneself. Reminds me of Emerson, the first line is the famous quote but what rang true for me is the “indifference of places”: “Traveling is a fool’s paradise. Our first journeys discover to us the indifference of places. At home I dream that at Naples, at Rome, I can be intoxicated with beauty, and lose my sadness. I pack my trunk, embrace my friends, embark on the sea, and at last wake up in Naples, and there beside me is the stern fact, the sad self, unrelenting, identical, that I fled from. I seek the Vatican, and the palaces. I affect to be intoxicated with sights and suggestions, but I am not intoxicated. My giant goes with me wherever I go.”
I do think travel in and of itself can be useful if only for shaking the I Am Navy Veteran I Love Freedom I Wore Dog Tags I Have DD 214 I Served My Country I Walked The Walk Shirt moreover I will buy this cobwebs loose on your routines and perspective. But you can’t just sit back and let the place do all the work I just came back from a 1 week long solo trip (first one) that was supposed to be with my GF for her bday. We broke up 3 days before the trip. This trip made me realize little pieces of myself that I lost during the relationship and made me appreciate that at the end of the day I will always have myself. No matter what. And that thought excited me, the future excites me. I’ve always subscribed to the “wherever you go, there you are mentality,” which is what I think you were getting at here. And I absolutely love the mentality you take into new places–thank you for posting it.
However, as another commenter stated, warm weather and the I Am Navy Veteran I Love Freedom I Wore Dog Tags I Have DD 214 I Served My Country I Walked The Walk Shirt moreover I will buy this sun has always made a difference in my mood/depression. So in that sense, I’ve found that “chasing the sun” is extremely important in how I pick destinations. This has been the first year where I’ve gotten into a northern/southern hemisphere alternation strategy (northern in its summer, southern in the north’s winter) and it’s made a world of difference for me. I also use weatherspark to look at the tourism score of the places I’m going. I try to always only pick places that will be above 7.0 (which is a tough score to achieve) before going. And if the place never gets above 7.0, I pick when it’s at its highest in the year (so that I don’t close off places I still want to see).
Having more sunshine truly makes a difference in many people’s lives. Or nomads/migrants seeking life elsewhere due to a specific, identifiable reason such as education, healthcare, or workers’ protections can find a relief to their woes by moving. This is just what’s worked for me.. If one only plans to live this life for a limited time, then sure following only great weather for a few years of doing this.. why not.. As indicated, I currently actively seek out places that are more difficult to endure, to become stronger and more resilient to maintain this lifestyle for the I Am Navy Veteran I Love Freedom I Wore Dog Tags I Have DD 214 I Served My Country I Walked The Walk Shirt moreover I will buy this rest of my life. My key takeaway is that you can have the best weather in the world.. if you think the weather will fill a void or make you happy.. it most likely won’t.
While I’m personally not a fan of this approach, I am a fan of “to each, their own” and it looks like you’ve hit on something. About 95% of the I Am Navy Veteran I Love Freedom I Wore Dog Tags I Have DD 214 I Served My Country I Walked The Walk Shirt moreover I will buy this time, I only go to places I know I’ll like (this rarely disappoints me), and I continually revisit them. I guess you could say it’s a specialist approach instead of a generalist one, and it goes well with slowmading. In recent years I tried two countries I’d otherwise have never gone to, and while they were cool in their own ways and the experience was eye-opening, I still much prefer my usual way. For me, going places where I speak the language (I’ve been learning and eventually using a very small handfull of languages for 20+ years) makes everything 10x better.
I guess my approach is more about context than emotion (since you mentioned emotion a lot in your post). The more context I have, the I Am Navy Veteran I Love Freedom I Wore Dog Tags I Have DD 214 I Served My Country I Walked The Walk Shirt moreover I will buy this more I’ll get out of it. Love this outlook but find that the weather has a lot to do with my mood though especially if staying longer term. Interesting. I’ve never even thought about choosing a location based on emotional reasons. It’s never occurred to me until now that some others would, and then be disappointed when … wherever you go, there you are … If you look at most ‘unhappy’ threads in this sub, you will see the majority are based on ’emotions’ about . Most people are not self-reflective enough to realize the elephant is in the room. And the elephant isn’t Paris, Rome or Lisbon. It’s themselves. Why even travel if it’s not for the feelings attached to seeing new places and learning about the world? The wonder, the awe, the joy of discovery, the camaraderie of meeting the right people, the proud sense of achievement, the enjoyment of new foods, etc… you know… emotions. Surely you make some travel decisions based on the feelings you would prefer to have? Otherwise, I’m curious how you decide where to go and why? Diving into photography while traveling helps divulge yourself into the environment and atmosphere around you. As a matter of fact, any art practice can help you dive into a meditative state. This can be drawing, painting, music, etc. I invested my assets into a Nikon camera, and it became the heart of my travels. I also invested into a sketchbook and experimented with drawing landscapes.
Keeping a journal is also very important. Each day that passes by, is a chance for rebirth. You are constantly learning and evolving without consciously perceiving this concepts short-term. If you stick to routine, it becomes a habit, and it’s a beautiful long-term investment. (M23) As a young traveler, i meet older travelers who have been nomading the I Am Navy Veteran I Love Freedom I Wore Dog Tags I Have DD 214 I Served My Country I Walked The Walk Shirt moreover I will buy this world for a long time. Many struggle to remember the early days of their travels. These individuals tend to detach from the concept of time when they don’t track their experiences, thoughts, personal emotions, and outer world involvement. It’s helped me remember names of travelers, places, and travel experiences. When I was in Japan, my first ten days in Tokyo were difficult. I was homesick, depressed, unsociable, and new to the digital nomad lifestyle. Once I shifted my mindset into focusing on my craft, I completely forgot about my problems on the home front. I ended up never wanting to leave Japan and stayed there for 3 months. A majority of the time it’s your mindset regarding personal issues. In every location i’ve traveling to, i’ve learned about new things about myself and human culture. You need to open your mind and search deeply into your soul.
I appreciate your insightful reply. I journal too and find that capturing my reactions and feelings while traveling also helps me process things. It’s a difficult one. I have friends who have moved to the I Am Navy Veteran I Love Freedom I Wore Dog Tags I Have DD 214 I Served My Country I Walked The Walk Shirt moreover I will buy this other side of the world thinking it will solve all their problems and different jobs will fix it all, but it didn’t. I do think weather and new environments can help a mood, but what we have is varying degrees of our own internal problems and at which degree yourself or someone has these problems. UItimately, I agree just going away does not fix everything but can improve things. Digital Nomads are individuals that leverage technology in order to work remotely and live an independent and nomadic lifestyle.
