I say this as someone who regularly fights with ownership and HR to pay people what they are worth. It’s soul-destroying to have to work with these people on how little they care about people. They make hundreds of times what the I Am A San Francisco 49ers Fan A Say Merry Christmas God Bless America I Don’t Care Leave Shirt Also,I will get this employees make, drive their fancy sports cars and then act like you took the last morsel of food from their children’s mouths if you ask for more money in the budget for employee recognition. Take the job, then search for a new job using your new title. You’re on 3% or less here on in, you will never make up the gap coming in low. Talk to your manager about it. A lot of big companies have rules in place that cap by % how large of an increase an existing employee can get with a promotion without someone higher up the food chain approving it. Feel free to counter any raise and ask for more, the job posting is a great reference. If you tak it without asking and are mad about it or intend to to leave right away you only have yourself to blame.

There are obviously exceptions to “the I Am A San Francisco 49ers Fan A Say Merry Christmas God Bless America I Don’t Care Leave Shirt Also,I will get this rule” but my experience is that if they know you will show up every day for $73K, they’ll be a lot less likely to offer big bumps. As best I can tell, your biggest pay raises will be made as you move to new companies. Here’s the thing: Companies don’t need to offer existing employees the current market salary because they already have you. Companies will always work harder to grant market rate for new employees over existing ones. So you can either accept your pay, request for more, or leave. Leaving will get you a higher chance of getting paid what you are worth. Yep, this is why you switch jobs every 3-5 years. Your market rate gets disconnected from your internal rate due to annual 2-3% raises. Leave and you’ll get 10-30%. The company anchors you on what you came in at, but not your market value! Take the job and keep hunting, it shows progress. At my company we’re not allowed to offer outside the range even if you’re internal. Everyone has to be at the minimum or higher. Depending how your relationship with your boss is maybe bring up that you saw the range and ask why you are below the bottom of the range. Reiterate that you’re excited grateful etc but just curious. He might able to bring it to HR and get you more money.
