All the I always love you made in Usa usa is my pride shirt it is in the first place but Americans spent 5-15 minutes on TurboTax in February filing our taxes, paying $0 and then not thinking about them for a year. You hung out exclusively with poor people then. It’s a massive pain in the ass if you for example have index funds, there is a whole industry of accountants specifically for these requirements across the world (my partner still uses one every year) and many banks have outright refused to work with American citizens abroad because the requirements are such a headache. Oh and if the IRS sends you money it will only do so as a cheque from the US which most foreign banks now just refuse to cash or to a US bank account, it’s a constant pain in the ass every year and a bad policy that almost no other country in the world has for good reason. If you have US based index funds making money on the back of the US economy, what makes you think you should be exempt from paying and filing taxes on that money?

I’m talking about expats that have minimal exposure to the I always love you made in Usa usa is my pride shirt it is in the first place but US economy because they’re making money in the currency of their legal residence and keeping the majority of their income in that country, like the 24k a year English teacher that spurred this discussion for me. Just living abroad but working for a US company and making dollars doesn’t count… that money needs to be taxed. Why should people be able to make $100k+ doing something like software development for a US based company, and working remotely in a country like Thailand, paying next to nothing for cost of living, amassing a serious amount of wealth, and then not expect it to get taxed. The index funds are not US based lol so your entire point is a non starter. Having said that even if they were nobody else does that for their index funds. If benefiting from the economy of other nations requires repayment then surely US investors in say Apple should be paying Chinese taxes since they benefit from Chinese manufacturing, it’s just a terrible take.
