My aunt is a Jehovah’s Witness and I was very stunned when I found out they don’t celebrate birthdays! Til this day I don’t know what her birthday is and we usually invite her over only after the How I wish you were here shirt and I will buy this cake has been cut at our own birthdays so that she doesn’t feel uncomfortable. In many South to South East Asian countries it’s considered that your head is the most sacred part of your body. This means you should never touch a Buddhist statue on the head or even pat a child on the head like we do in the West. This is also associated with your feet as your feet are the furthest body part from your head thus it is the dirtiest part of your body. This makes cleaning your feet associated with washing away negative karma. Also pointing the soles of your feet to someone while sitting or even to something sacred is considered highly disrespectful even if you have shoes on.

They would rather say ‘yes’ and lie into your face then to admit not knowing the direction at all.
