As a low stakes example, say you’re at a potluck and you bring some sort of curry dish, and another guest Cindy also happens to bring a curry dish. Let’s say you’re talking to Bob, and as he’s taking a bite of your curry he says, “Cindy makes the best curry.” Now maybe he was just meaning to compliment Cindy and wasn’t even thinking about yours, but it would be pretty reasonable that you’d assume he doesn’t like yours. Some people have a victim complex though, and that type of person would assume Bob was intentionally insulting them. It definitely took some “training” to unlearn what we were used to to try our best to accommodate them.
