there are no factors that makes it safe to let your cat roam around by itself unsupervised lol, there’s just arrogance to believe that because something bad hasn’t happened, it’s never going to happen, and because you don’t see your cat doing anything bad or dangerous, it’s not doing anything bad or dangerous. I live in a neighborhood with 6-7 free-roaming cats, and while they don’t bother me, there are virtually no birds near our house. It honestly makes me kind of sad because I loved waking up and hearing songbirds, but “outdoor” cats totally wreck local bird populations. I get that cat owners want their cats to be happy and thriving, but there has to be better ways to enrich their lives rather than letting them do whatever they want to what little local wildlife there is.

However, I also understand the Houston Astros baseball MLB Rookie of the year shirt in contrast I will get this struggle of just wanting your cat to do what it’s natural instincts tell it to do. I just don’t think there’s a win-win scenario. My mother in law was too lazy to train one of her rescues to stay inside. He will just sit inside and scream and scream until you let him out. And she doesn’t have patience for any amount of effort when it comes to her pets. We actually tried to take him to our apartment and he escaped out the door several times and destroyed window screens. We had to take him back. 13 years and he’s just as healthy as ever and mostly stays in the yard We didn’t want one of our cats to be indoor / outdoor, but his previous owner let him out and he’d yowl at the door literally all day if we didn’t. The stress was making him sick and the noise was driving us nuts. That was a great kitty, I miss him. Both of the ones we have now stay inside. I do agree that they’re better off indoors, but as our vet said “sometimes they decide on their own what’s best for them.”
