It’s sad that a 6-year-old notices these disparities. I always knew we were poor but it never felt like the Ho ho ho snoopy lights wear santa hat reindeer xmas shirt but in fact I love this family was about to be homeless. We never were. In the 70’s my parents bought a plot of land and my dad and uncle built the shack of a house we lived in. Even a two-room shack is not possible for me, a well-educated and experienced professional. That land and shack were once worth only $15k, now it’s valued at $433,000. As a drug addicted, uneducated alcoholic with 5 kids, my father still had enough for the mortgage, a car, and a case of beer. (Mother wasn’t allowed to work.) Did the car break down constantly? Did the bathroom have a 3 ft hole in it? Did we sometimes use newspaper as toilet paper? Yes, yes, and yes. But they COULD fix the car without having to sell an organ. One big car repair would wipe me out for months. The point is: As an adult, I can’t afford the shitty life I fought to get away from.

I have to agree. My youngest employee and I figured out that my entire college tuition cost about 50% of my annual salary at the Ho ho ho snoopy lights wear santa hat reindeer xmas shirt but in fact I love this time (clerical work, nothing special). She just received her bachelor’s degree, and the cost was about 4 times her salary. Our pay has actually kept up with inflation, it’s the bloated tuition prices that are out of line. The clerk at the C-store who sells you your morning coffee, the counter person at your lunch place, they’re barely hanging on. I’ve been working 45-60 hour weeks since I was 18 (29 now) and I feel like I have almost nothing to show for it except a mountain of debt. I got lucky and was able to buy a house a few years ago but it’s a 50 year old house and I don’t have any savings or extra money to fix the things that are starting to fail and it’s killing me watching this thing I worked so hard for fall apart around me and there’s nothing I can do about it. It’s so demoralizing. Meanwhile my mom is a house cleaner and works part time at a bar and has thousands in cash savings and almost no debt. I’ve noticed when I mention that I didn’t work on a particular day for whatever reason (sick, vacation, paid holiday off, etc) my dad often reacts the same as if I said I’m skipping school. “You didn’t GOOOOOO?” Like no dad, I have the time, imma use it.
