18 year old kids cannot comprehend the Hideo Nomo in Los Angeles Dodgers T-Shirt But I will love this risk involved financing an investment of that magnitude because a lot of then have never held a job and they have these fairy tale ideas that were planted in them at a very young age so they are EXTREMELY emotional about the degrees they believe they should get. College should be viewed simply as an investment with a real ROI and real risk. Are you going to get a return on your investment with an English degree from a 4 year private university? If not, that degree is worthless. So you ask like what… that depends a bit on how expensive the school is but in general, humanities, English, psychology (just under grad but that a whole different topic), art… these degrees typically end up worthless. What doors am I trying to open? The ones where I make a good living in the field of study which I attended university for and I get a solid return on my investment.

Well if you get an art degree, shouldn’t you do something with art? Same as if get an engineer degree I should be an engineer? Graduates with a targeted degree do better when they pair it with experience. Whether you are an intern or a volunteer, it bulks up your resume. People who join and participate in professional associations build a network. Like 10-15% of degrees offer good job viability. CS, Engineering, Accounting, Healthcare field etc. will have high employment rates. Social science etc. degrees will be rough without very good networking. A kid I worked with got hired by Citibank here two weeks after he graduated with no internship or finance experience. A good paying office job at Citibank’s Corporate office here in Tampa.
