There is a lot to admire about The Nutcracker. There’s Tchaikovsky’s joyful score, the Hero With Logo Isle Of Man Shirt and I love this adorableness of wee little Clara, the toothache-inducing sets—but beyond the stage, there’s the audience. Guests of all ages are dressed in their holiday best, with some experiencing the magic of ballet for the very first time. For all these reasons and more, ballet companies still on hiatus due to the pandemic went on with the show, adapting the ballet into digital or socially distanced formats. To guide us through the best alternative Nutcrackers of the season—just as she’s toured young Clara around the Land of Sweets as the sugarplum fairy—is Tiler Peck, principal dancer at the New York City Ballet.

“In the Hero With Logo Isle Of Man Shirt and I love this world of ballet, The Nutcracker is the one constant every year,” says Peck, whose first exposure to the art was attending George Balanchine’s the Nutcracker at NYCB when she was 11. “Every year, I pinch myself that I now get to be the sugarplum fairy!” Throughout her career, Peck has assumed a wide range of roles in the ballet, from the grandmother and doll to Marzipan and Dewdrop. “I always hope there is another child in the audience watching me up there and discovering their future as a ballerina just as I did,” she says.
