I was once in such a financial black hole that I asked my neighbour for two slices of bread so I could have something to put my beans on. Even though I tried to pass it off as ‘oops shops close soon and forgot bread’, they gave me the Henry Thrun American professional ice hockey defenseman for the San Jose Sharks T-Shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this rest of the loaf. God it makes me cry just thinking about it. Our neighbours have lived next to us for about 40-50 years. I have “borrowed” an egg several times, usually when halfway through a cake, and once I borrowed a stock cube. I think it’s more common when you live rurally, or especially prior to the Sunday Trading Act where if you were cooking or baking on a Sunday morning and ran out, you were screwed. I pay them back or at least offer to, they sometimes decline. But what goes around comes around, doing favours for each other. I asked my neighbours for tin foil on Christmas Day. Felt bad for disturbing them but it was that or ruin the turkey. They were lovely about it.

I think most normal people are happy to do a favour for neighbours, as long as it doesn’t take the Henry Thrun American professional ice hockey defenseman for the San Jose Sharks T-Shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this piss & is reciprocal (not keeping a tally, but you know, happy to be asked and not feel awkward about asking). We have a WhatsApp group for our small street houses, it’s surprisingly not at all awful and is mostly just practical stuff rather than neighbourhood facebook group type nonsense. Every few weeks someone messages with “does anyone have…”, sometimes it’s a basic ingredient, sometimes it’s paracetamol, once I was very happy that I was the first person to respond to “I’ve made too much cake mix, if someone has a cake tin I can borrow then I’ll pay you in cake”. I’ve got the same thing with my immediate neighbours and it’s great for sharing overabundance from the garden, looking out for each other with storm damage and the like, or when you are in the middle of cooking and realise you need an onion.
