I’ll give you the Hello 3rd Grade Leopard Rainbow Back To School Teacher T-Shirt besides I will buy this honest answer… most gun owners are for safe gun safety. That’s not the issue… the issue is how it would be enforced. How does one prove they’re storing their guns safely? Doesn’t it require someone coming to check? Who checks? What if that person notices some other unrelated violation while they’re in your house? Can they pursue it? Even if it’s an honest mistake, people get charged with crimes all the time that we’re honest mistakes. So maybe the government doesn’t come to your house… maybe when you buy a safe, you get a card that proves it. Then you have to show that card when buying a gun? That only works if all gun sales or transfers go through an FFL… and that also adds a cost burden beyond the gun itself. Whether you agree with the 2nd amendment or not, imposing fees to exercise a constitutional right is a big non-starter for the Supreme Court. Can you imagine having to pay for a license to publish your opinion on the internet?

People owned muskets, ammunition, and other arms, which at the time were military grade weapons. The book The Second Amendment: A History by Michael Waludman goes into this pretty in depth, and is overall very informative regardless of what side of the gun debate one finds themselves on. It’s worth checking out.
