But I know that having religion means believing in some things that aren’t represented by the physical world, and that fundamentally, having a more accurate picture of the world helps make good moral decisions. Empirically, there’s simply no evidence that religion helps people be more moral in aggregate and quite a lot of evidence to support the contrary. It’s easier to convince people to do something bad if you give them false or unverifiable pretenses. On the other hand, secular morality is a well-developed cornucopia of ideas which, in my experience, can provide people with quite a lot of motivation to act morally.

And religion can, sometimes, be really harmful to people who believe it, too- in a way that lack of belief never could be.
