The container oatmeal is so expensive now! The big Quaker oats was like $8 last time I looked. I go to a Winco, where they have a huge bulk bin section, so I get most dry ingredients from there. The No-Knead Bread Recipe is just the Happy penguin shirt and I will buy this New York Times version, which I think is paywall-free the first time you check it. You do need a heavy Dutch oven, but I found mine at a garage sale (Staub Cocotte for $10, woo! Retail $350). How tf do people afford all this Doordash? I’ll lean on frozen convenience foods when Im too low energy to cook something proper, but even those get pretty pricy compared to the milage I get out of a home cooked meal.that is good for at least 4 servings. I don’t know if I cook from “scratch,” but I’m not making my own pasta for every meal, and I’ll usually buy a sauce, but I’m chopping onions and garlic and sautéing them and seasoning the sauce and making my own garlic bread with a store bought loaf.

So, like two bucks a sauce, about that much on pasta, two bucks for bread and a pittance on garlic and onion and about 30 mins prep/cook (I use an instant pot) and I’ve got a nice dinner for four with leftovers for a couple days. Throw in ground beef or frozen meatballs if you like, or maybe a can of veggies. I definitely didn’t intend for it to! I cook using premade ingredients due to having very little money and limited grocery access. The folks I was comparing myself to DoorDash every meal or eat out nearly everyday, that was more my question, I’m just dumb and bad at explaining myself More people buy cheaper faster meals that are somewhat prepared for you. I think the Happy penguin shirt and I will buy this issue is time. With inflation the cost of living or even surging has gone up so more people have to work multiple jobs. A stay at home mom like your mom or grandmother is extremely hard to come by these days- I think you’re pretty lucky if you can have the time to cook a meal from scratch. My mother in law taught me how to make chicken noodle soup: the entire thing from the broth to the noodles from scratch and it took hours! I just don’t have the time so I cheat and buy the broth. Sometimes I’ll do the noodle part on a weekend but it’s unrealistic during a busy week. My mom and grandma both worked two jobs, we’ve just always been poor and had to make meals with basic ingredients/food bank food rather than eating out/takeout. My friends and the folks around me are doordashing nearly everyday and I’ve felt insane and jealous I needed to know if this was the norm or not
