Many years ago, prob 20 years ago, British Airways had an around the Happy easter I’m just here for the chicks shirt but in fact I love this world ticket, where you can travel to 6 continents and 3 intracontinental transfers in business class for one price. Not sure if they still have it; couple of my friends did it and it was very reasonable, $5,000… they traveling all over the world for 6 months. Lots of couch surfing, no flying between neighboring countries if there’s rail service between them (although in that part of Asia, bus service is more common so you might overcome your aversion.Eat where locals eat, avoid fancy restaurants except as a (very special) treat. Don’t confine yourself to just southeast Asia – “there’s a whole other world out there.” I’d recommend starting from Japan. Japan will be the best country you visit. You’ll understand when you travel there. That way everything you and see and do in other countries won’t compare. Really go to unique places wherever you visit too. This is your experience, your story. Don’t just follow the boring Thailand – Vietnam route. Go somewhere nobody has heard of in Thailand. That’s where you will learn and grow

Get the Happy easter I’m just here for the chicks shirt but in fact I love this book “Vagabonding” and read all of it. It’s a little bit out of date, but it’ll help you get into the mindset of a trip like this, it’s very different from any trip you’ve probably taken before. I recommend getting a ticket to Bangkok, a hostel for the first three nights, a refundable ticket for a possible next destination (just for immigration), and not booking anything else. Get an idea of where you’d love to go, and an idea of when is a good time to go (because of rainy seasons), and make decisions on timeline/path when you’re out there. You’ll probably end up wanting to go on a wildly different trip than you’re expecting before you go.
