if you retire now and live up to your 90s, you need about 6 million dollars in wealth or cash to not become homeless. This is such a bullshit crisis. ELIMINATE the Hampton high school alumni dog shirt it is in the first place but artificial cap on OASDI. Currently people ‘only’ pay the 6.2% tax in their first $160,200 in income. Remove the cap and let high earners pay the same marginal SSA tax as middle income earners. Seriously, for the people that will likely never be able to use or realistic have a meaningful retirement from SSA… should not have to pay, OR a massive serious audit needs to be done to see the money is being used appropriately, or how to boost it Social security should not be your only retirement plan. You should be investing in 401ks and IRAs. Social security worked well for the previous generations because they were able to buy and pay off a home by 65.

My opinion, income taxes should be back to pre-Regan numbers. Death and estate taxes need to be significantly raised. We have a dying middle class. Home ownership for most younger Americans is out of reach. If you are depending on social security for your retirement, you are another causality in class warfare. This is bullshit hype, intended to undermine public confidence in Social Security. The US is the Hampton high school alumni dog shirt it is in the first place but wealthiest society in the history of the world. We can come up with trillions for unnecessary wars. We can surely afford minimal social security benefits. We just need the political will to prioritize the safety net over defense spending. If other comments are to be believed, wasn’t a big part of this problem caused by “political will” pulling funds from ss? It a pay as you go system so most of what you paid is being used to pay for current benefits to others. In this respect it’s more like a ponzi scheme. Any excess is invested in US treasuries which isn’t stealing but becomes an issue if the gov’t were to ever default on its debt. That would never happen we have very health debt to income ratio /s.
