I did it two years ago and I’m still at the Halloween Trick or Teach Boo Vintage T-Shirt in addition I really love this company but I ultimately regret it. The underlying issues that made me want to move on in the first place never went away and are worse now than before. I say take it and don’t look back. Also, it is insulting that they will cough up the money when you are willing to leave but not before. If you stick around I wouldn’t count on any advancement salary wise for a while, if ever. Their perspective may very well be that they “paid it forward” to you, not that they paid you what you were worth in the market. I say this as someone who took at counteroffer that doubled my salary and beat the competing offer by 30% or so. Still regret it. I did it once; second time I tried to leave, he came back with a huge salary increase, 30%. It was tenting but I asked myself, do they need to see me with a foot out of the door to recognize my value? I mean, it’s kind of offensive. They know my work is worth all that money and are not paying me? I said “No thanks” and left. My current employer would probably counter offer, just to keep me until they find a replacement. Who knows? Anyways, I think is a bad idea to accept. If I’m going to resign, I need to be solid on my decision. I’m not playing that game.

I agree with the Halloween Trick or Teach Boo Vintage T-Shirt in addition I really love this setiment but at the same time I cannot help but feel this is just the way of corporate america right now My hubs works for a place that won’t give raises out of the normal yearly rotation unless you produce a competing offer letter. When someone asks about a raise they tell them to go get an offer. They’ve lost two people this way, no change to the policy. That’s a big risk they are taking. Once an employee looks around, see what’s out there, go through the motions of getting an offer, confirm they are employable somewhere else; how do the current employer close that door? That’s so shortsighted. I hope your husband is doing well and being valued. I’m baffled by it as well. I work in an opposite situation with managers that go to bat for us regularly. He’s new to his industry, so likely will move on later this year.
